Organic Food Must-Buys For Your Nieces And Nephews
Ideally, we would be eating an all-organic diet, all the time. However, there are certain barriers to switching to an all-organic diet – cost being a major one. When choosing food for children, we Aunties must be extra cautious and mindful of children’s growing bodies. Children’s bodies are more vulnerable than those of adults when it comes to foods that contain chemicals and genetically modified organisms (GMO).
We’ve identified products that should be consumed organic – or where its non-organic counterpart may pose the greatest amount of threat to children’s health.
Peaches and strawberries: According to the Environmental Working Group’s 'Dirty Dozen' list, peaches and strawberries rank the highest on the list; these fruits have the most amount of pesticides on them. Certified organic fruits cannot use commercial-grade, chemical pesticides. Protect your children from harmful chemicals by buying organic peaches and strawberries at the local farmers’ market whenever possible.
Sugar and artificial sweeteners: sugar beets and corn are often genetically modified crops in the U.S. This means conventional sugar packets, as well as products containing high-fructose corn syrup, may contain GMOs. Aspartame, a widely used artificial sweetener, also contains GMOs. Always opt for organic, natural cane sugar. A natural sugar alternative with no negative effects is Stevia.
Meat: Many commercial-grade meats come from animals that are fed genetically-modified corn or soy feed.
Soy milk and tofu: If you do not consume dairy, soy products are one of the most popular dairy alternatives. Spend the extra few cents on certified organic soy milk and tofu. Soybean is one of the most common genetically modified crops in the world. Crops containing GMOs often contain hormones that can trigger allergic reactions. When genetically-modified soybeans first started to be imported in the U.K., soy allergies went up by 50 percent. Certified organic products cannot contain any GMOs.
A balanced diet full of fresh vegetables and fruit is a key to children’s health – but knowing what is in the produce and everyday foods are equally important steps. Because genetically-modified organisms are not labelled clearly in many products, it is best to opt for products labelled certified organic or “non-GMO.” Visit the local farmer’s market frequently for fresh produce in order to avoid preservatives, and buy seasonally whenever possible.
