Thanks, Moms!
One of my favorite characters in the movie Mean Girls is Mrs. George, mother of the teenage queen bee, Regina. Played by the hilariously funny Amy Poehler, Mrs. George dons tight pink velour sweats, just like her teenage daughter. “I’m not like a regular mom,” she proclaims. “I’m a cool mom.”
In the two years I’ve been an aunt, I’ve learned that it takes a lot more than a youthful wardrobe, attitude and vocabulary to make a mom cool. In my eyes, my sisters and friends are some of the hippest and coolest people I know. In honor of Mother’s Day, I wanted to share why these women amaze and impress me on a regular basis. After all, without them, I wouldn’t be an aunt!
My sister Kathleen, mother of Caroline, is one of the most knowledgeable people out there when it comes to kids. She teaches first grade and juggles a two-year-old who has a mind of her own better than I can even manage my online calendar.
Aidan’s mom, my sister Liz, has such a knack for keeping her head together, even when the little guy pushes all of her buttons. For the first two months of his life, Aidan barely slept a wink and was as fickle as a kid comes. I think I would have pulled all of my hair out but she has managed to keep her sense of humor.
Elena and I met when we were just three years old. We were two talkative toddlers that grew into the best of friends. All she’s ever wanted is to be a mom, and when she had little Alyssa her dream came true. As busy as her life is, she always has time to talk, even when I call her about how much I can’t stand Heidi and Spencer on The Hills.
Vanessa, my dear friend from high school, is the newest mommy I know. She had little Emily last year and already I see these amazing instincts kicking in. Beyond her familial responsibilities, she works and takes graduate classes. In my eyes, she’s become a super hero!
My mom...a true Savvy Auntie!
I can’t salute the moms I know without mentioning the biggest rock star of them all, my very own mother. She is my hero. Plus, she has tons of nieces and nephews and she has shown me the ropes along the way. She is a true Savvy Auntie!
But really, the coolest thing about each of these women is that they have allowed me to part of their family. Without hesitation, they have let me laugh, sing, play and just cuddle with the kids. Most of all they have all let me learn how to be an aunt. They’ve never scolded me for buying noisy toys or calling during nap time. They don’t make fun of me when I have no idea what parent-related issue they are talking about or run away from a not -so-pleasant smelling diaper. I am grateful for each of moms in my life. Best of all, if I ever become a mom myself, I know my kids will have the coolest aunts around!
