Chanukah Treats for Nieces and Nephews!

Written By Savvy Auntie Staff Writers
Once in a while, we come across a guest Expert who has something impactful to contribute to the Savvy Auntie Community. Jewish Treats, a popular daily email and blog, offers us some wonderful Chanukah traditions to share with our nieces and nephews:
The eight day celebration of Chanukah is a terrific opportunity for Jewish families around the world to connect, bond and share in the warmth of centuries old traditions. While many of the traditional Chanukah activities are actually customs handed down from generation to generation (such as eating fried foods), there is one primary mitzvah (commandment) on the holiday: pirsoomay nissa, publicizing the miracle. This is accomplished by the lighting of the menorah.
Near or far, every Jewish Savvy Auntie has the opportunity at this time of year to strengthen her nephew or niece’s connection to his or her Jewish heritage. Thinking about the theme of pirsoomay nissa, publicizing the miracle, here are a few fun thoughts for Chanukah activities:
The Gift Giver
At this time of year, help teach your nieces and nephews about the power of giving by encouraging them to choose one or more charities to which they may make a donation or give one of the gifts they receive. Take a moment to discuss the importance of charity in Jewish life.
Menorah Moments
Help your nieces and nephews make their own menorah or send them one that is specific to their tastes. Here's an idea of what a menorah should be.
Dreidel In The Park
If the weather allows, take your nieces and nephews to the park, find a picnic table and challenge passers-by to a game of dreidel. Encourage you’re the kids to explain the origin of the game.
Weekend Warriors
Here’s a hands on game to educate your younger nieces and nephews. Take them and a group of their friends to the park and have them re-enact (safely) the story of Chanukah. Most kids will love the "action."
Whether you are actually publicizing the miracle or not (it’s always hard to tell), these activities will leave both you and your nieces and nephews with wonderful, warm memories for years to come.
